“The Banality of Love,” a play by contemporary Jewish playwright Savyon Liebrecht, explores the complex and deeply unplatonic relationship between two of the 20th century’s most influential philosophers — Hannah Arendt and Martin Heidegger.

This is not a conventional love story between an 18-year-old woman and a 35-year-old married man, where trust and obligation are exploited. Beyond the romance and the teacher-student dynamic, the secret relationship between Jewish Hannah Arendt and Heidegger, a temporary member of the Nazi Party, is both fascinating and profoundly disturbing.

Theatre, by its nature, is a political art form. Yet it also transforms the political dimensions of human existence into rich artistic expression. At its core, theatre concerns itself with the human condition—exploring what it means to be human and probing the existential crises that define our lives.

This inquiry gains even greater urgency in light of the totalitarian and violent regimes that marked the 20th century. Moreover, the forces of politics, technological progress, and globalization continue to shape modern life, continually challenging the space and scope for individual freedom.

Ilia State University Theatre, the first and currently the only professional theatre within Georgian higher education, opened in 2010 on the premises of the once-celebrated Theatre Basement in Vake.

The theatre’s primary mission is to provide a foundation for the professional training and development of Ilia State University students in theatre arts. It currently supports the Master’s Degree Programme “Live Theatre Arts: Acting and Directing.” Always open to young directors and arts professionals, the theatre eagerly participates in their experimental and innovative projects.

Performances at Iliauni Theatre often feature students and alumni from Ilia State University’s arts programmes, offering vital practical training for their future careers. Operating as a venture project, the theatre invites different directors and groups of actors for each production. As such, it has no permanent artistic director or fixed troupe of actors.

The University Theatre was inaugurated on September 30, 2010, with the vaudeville “Witted Woe” by 19th-century Georgian playwright Avxenti Tsagareli, directed by Otar Egadze.

The theatre season begins in the first week of October and runs through the end of June. Performances are held Thursday through Sunday, starting at 20:00.
