“Factory Girls,” a play by Frank McGuinness, is set in 1980s Ireland and portrays the everyday struggles of working-class women confronting economic hardship, social inequality, and the pressures of a male-dominated system.
When the new factory director, Rohan, imposes changes that threaten their already precarious jobs, five women—each with a distinct voice and background—are pushed to the edge. What begins as an act of resistance against poor working conditions grows into a powerful gesture of solidarity.
Through a spontaneous strike, the women not only demand fair treatment but also assert their right to be heard—as workers, as women, and as individuals.
Their fight, however, is far from simple. Internal tensions and clashing personalities challenge their unity, while the harsh economic realities of the era cast a looming shadow.
Ultimately, the play offers no easy answers. Instead, it exposes the deeper roots of inequality and celebrates the quiet strength of those who dare to stand up against it.
Rustavi Drama Theatre was founded in 1967 by young actors from what was then known as the Second National Theatre (Marjanishvili Theatre). The company’s leader and artistic director was Giga Lordkipanidze, who later served for decades as Chairman of the Georgian Theatre Workers Union and Rector of the Theatre and Film University. Today, the theatre proudly bears his name.
Rustavi was one of the youngest industrial cities in Soviet Georgia and is now a post-industrial city. During the Soviet era, the theatre was among the leading young companies, known for its revolutionary repertoire that staged both national and international classics. It regularly invited some of the most prominent actors and directors to collaborate.
Since 1971 local and international co-productions have been a priority for Rustavi Theatre. Many of its actors and directors have received multiple awards since the theatre’s founding.
In 1994, Rustavi Theatre founded Georgia’s first international theatre festival, “Golden Mask.” The theatre has three stages and more than 30 performances.
The current director, Soso Nemsadze, has an extensive creative portfolio that includes around 100 plays, many of which have been honored with awards for Best Director and Grand Prix in various years.
