Young director Saba Aslamazishvili after his very successful debut (“Marat/Sade”), turns to experiment one time while staging William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. Aided by a modern and quite unusual form, he together with his group of actors, will try to find bonds between reality and dreams and determine the essence of theatre for young professionals today, along with reflecting on what love is in the 21st century and where the imagination limits stand for the lunatics, the lovers and the poets. The director and the actors shall try to apprehend the play “more than cool reason ever comprehends” and “as the imagination bodies forth the forms of things unknown”, turn them to shape, give them a local habitation and a name while making the audience remember that our lives, lit by passion, illuminated by love and beautified by theatre can be as extraordinary as the most captivating dream.
The Ilia State University Theatre, the first and for the time being the only professional theatre in Georgian higher education setting, was opened in 2010 on the premises of once celebrated Theatre Basement in Vake. The Theatre operates as a venture project, inviting different directors and groups of actors for its performances. Hence, it is not governed by an artistic director and has no permanent group of actors. The Theatre is always open for youth to participate in its shows and explore performing arts. The theatre also supports the University Theatre Arts Programme making sure that the students majoring in acting, directing and set designing get a highly professional training of stage.
