“Hamlet” has more than 400 years of stage history; it truly is the strangest play ever written. There is probably not a single day when it isn’t being read, rehearsed or performed somewhere in the world. It has become something like a perpetuum mobile — a story that endlessly re-narrates itself.
So what is it, really? A historical chronicle? A philosophical drama? A political allegory? A psychological thriller? In truth, it can be all of these and more. It depends entirely on when, where, and by whom the story is told.
In every version, the core scenario remains the same — but what transforms the play is the interior life of the characters. The plot dictates their actions, but it does not prescribe their psychology or their motives. This is where actors, as embodiments of the spirit of their time, step in. They carry within their bodies the imprint of their cultural and social environment — and in doing so, they recreate Hamlet anew, turning it into a mirror of the world around them.
"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark" reflected Shakespeare’s Elizabethan England.
"Something is rotten in the age of Hope" echoed Heiner Müller during the Cold War.
"Something is rotten in the age of dopamine" — this is what our production reflects back to us today.
Theatre Company Haraki, founded in 2019, is a collective of seven permanent members led by director Sandro Kalandadze and writer Mariam Megvinyte.
Our core methodology centers on collaboration in contrast to the traditional hierarchical structures typical of Georgian state theatres. Our ongoing research focuses on the actor and the actor’s body as a primary means of expression.
We seek dialogue and exchange, aiming to create relevant theatre rooted in contemporary experience. We emphasize the development of original texts and new forms, working without ideological constraints.
In 2021, after pandemic restrictions were lifted, we felt it was the right time to open our own space. This led to the founding of Haraki Theatre, which is collectively managed by our company. Since then, the space has evolved into much more than a theatre — it has become a shelter for independent creative projects. These include poetry readings, music performances, censored film screenings, communal gatherings, book readings, experimental performance, and more.
To date, we have collaborated with over 50 artists from Georgia and abroad. Haraki has become a genuine safe space for the free exchange of ideas in an increasingly authoritarian political climate.
